Lydia Van Dreel (they/them), Horn

Professor of Horn, Lydia Van Dreel joined the University of Oregon faculty in 2006, and, prior to that appointment, held a ten-year tenured position as Co-Principal Horn of the Sarasota Orchestra. Van Dreel is currently a Faculty Fellow in UO’s Clark Honors College and was recently named UO’s 2024-25 Presidential Fellow in the Arts. Their career has encompassed a wide variety of performing and teaching over the past three decades, including current positions as principal horn of the Colorado Mahlerfest Orchestra and Third Horn in the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, and past positions as a member of the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, the Britt Music Festival Orchestra, The Spoleto Festival Orchestra, The New World Symphony Orchestra, and many others. Professor Van Dreel has been a featured concerto soloist with the Peninsula Symphony, The Sarasota Orchestra, The Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, the Salem Philharmonia, the Willamette Valley Symphony, and others. Their most recent chamber music project, the Lawrence Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet, just released their 2nd album, Do You See? Do You Not See?, available on streaming platforms and as a limited-edition vinyl. Professor Van Dreel will be teaching a course on Music and Meaning in Siena, Italy in Summer, 2027 as a part of the University of Oregon’s Global Education Studies program.
