Flutist Molly Barth and Brian have a wide-ranging discussion, into which are inserted four movements of “Flute Set” by contemporary composer Adolphus Hailstork. Molly describes teaching at Vanderbilt, which has maintained in-person music lessons this fall, as they also test weekly for COVID. This seems to be rare.
Molly says “Music is my voice,” and plays beautifully with a rich tone and seemingly effortless fingering. Each of the four movements are quite different, and Molly challenges us to tell her what we think is the idea behind the second movement. This begins at 15:30 and lasts about half a minute. For my part, I think it’s about repeatedly getting hit with a piece of bad news and bouncing right back up again. What do YOU think? Molly would like to know.
